The government has extended the motor vehicle tax exemption given by the government for scrapping 15-year-old commercial vehicles in Himachal Pradesh by one more year. This kind of exemption on getting vehicles scrapped through agencies decided by the government will now continue till March 2026. Last year, the government implemented this exemption on commercial vehicles and issued orders regarding this in February, 2024. Now the government has extended it by one more year. In this, a one-time exemption is provided in the Motor Vehicle Act, and the government is also giving an exemption in interest and penalty in it. The state government has provided such an exemption to encourage people to get old vehicles scrapped. It is said that along with scrapping old vehicles, the government is also giving benefits in road tax, especially in the next new vehicle that people will buy. These orders have been issued from the office of Principal Secretary of the Transport Department, RD Nazim, who has now become Additional Chief Secretary.
A notification regarding these orders has been issued on Tuesday. There are numerous vehicles in the state that have completed the period of 15 years, but people are driving them further after getting them passed. If they do not want to drive them further and the condition of the vehicle is bad, then they can take advantage of the exemption given by the government. The government is assigning the work of scrapping vehicles to some agencies in Himachal. So far, the government has approved the opening of such institutes at two places here, Solan and Hamirpur. Some more companies have applied for this. Along with this, the government is also opening some institutes here for the passing of vehicles, which will be completely automatic. There will be no manual passing in the future.
