Bilaspur: The proposal to construct a state-of-the-art trauma block at AIIMS Bilaspur has received in-principle approval from the finance committee, paving the way for a major expansion of emergency healthcare services in the state.
The proposed 300-plus bed facility will be built at an estimated cost of ₹350 crore and will include a trauma centre, trauma ICU, emergency block and burn unit equipped with advanced medical technology. The project had been under consideration for nearly two years and was reviewed by Union Health Minister JP Nadda during his visit to the institute in 2025.
Following the in-principle clearance, the process for final financial approval and release of funds will now begin. Once the budget is sanctioned, the tender process for construction will be initiated.
Currently, over 100 patients visit the emergency OPD at AIIMS Bilaspur daily, while the facility has arrangements for only around 30 patients, putting significant pressure on emergency services. The need for an advanced trauma centre has become increasingly urgent.
More than 30 patients are referred daily from medical colleges in Hamirpur and Mandi to AIIMS Bilaspur. Patients are also referred from TMC, including cases of abdominal pain, poisoning and snake bites. As per norms, primary treatment should be provided at district hospitals or medical colleges, with only critical cases referred to higher institutions. However, since the establishment of AIIMS, referrals from medical colleges have become routine, creating challenges in providing timely emergency care to seriously ill patients.
