The Faculty of Legal Science at Shoolini University hosted a three-day workshop on “Criminal Justice System in Practice” in collaboration with Royal Holloway, University of London. The event brought together global perspectives and local realities, enriching the learning experience for students and researchers.
The workshop featured Dr. Shailesh Kumar, a criminologist, Commonwealth Scholar, and Lecturer in Law at Royal Holloway University of London.
In his introductory address Prof. P K Khosla, Chancellor Shoolini University, highlighted the value of such international collaborations in building a progressive and socially aware legal education environment.
The inaugural session was led by Prof. (Dr.) Nandan Sharma, Associate Dean, Faculty of Legal Science Shoolini University, who formally launched the workshop. In his address, he underlined the importance of connecting legal theory with social realities and thanked Vice Chancellor Prof. Atul Khosla and senior leadership for their constant support to the Faculty’s vision.
Over three days, key speaker Dr. Shailesh Kumar delivered thought-provoking lectures on topics including “Why Do We Punish?”, Law and Inequality, and Juvenile Justice. Drawing from his research on the POCSO Act, criminal justice reforms, and access to justice for marginalised communities, his sessions encouraged deep reflection among students.
A particularly engaging session saw students analyse theories of punishment through real-life cases, exploring both emotional and narrative aspects of justice. Discussions on caste, class, and access to legal remedies pushed students to think critically about structural barriers in India’s legal system.
For LL.M. and Ph.D. scholars, Dr. Kumar focused on research design, academic writing, policy translation, and publishing strategies. Personal consultations offered valuable guidance to early-career researchers.
Beyond the classroom, the workshop also featured faculty interactions, a visit to the Yogananda Knowledge Centre, and a symbolic tree plantation drive, adding meaningful experiences for participants.
The workshop was convened by Ms. Meghna Thakur and Ms. Palak Sharma Assistant Prof at Faculty of Legal Science Shoolini University, who shared, “We wanted our students to see the law not just as rules, but as a living tool that affects lives. Through this workshop, Dr. Shailesh helped us create that lens.”
