A 10-day Advanced Training Programme on ‘Vegetable Seed Production for Sustainable Productivity” commenced at the Centre for Advanced Faculty Training in Horticulture (Vegetables) under the Department of Vegetable Science, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni.
A total of 14 scientists from various State Agricultural Universities and institutes of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) across the country are taking part in the training. The participants represent the states of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Telangana.
The training programme was inaugurated by Dr Manish Kumar, Dean, College of Horticulture. The programme aims to strengthen professional competencies in vegetable seed production and will cover diverse aspects including seed production in cucurbits, peas and beans; use of CMS lines for hybrid development in cole crops; planting material production in ginger and turmeric; eco-friendly seed production practices; seed quality enhancement; and integrated management of insect pests and diseases.
To ensure hands-on learning, participants will receive extensive practical exposure through field and laboratory visits across different departments of the University, including visits to Horticulture Research and Training Station (HRTS) and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kandaghat, as well as interactions with progressive farmers of the Saproon Valley.
In recognition of the significant contributions of the Department of Vegetable Science and its state-of-the-art infrastructure, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has sanctioned this training programme. Since its inception in 1995, the Department has organized 34 advanced training programmes of three-week duration on critical themes for faculty members and scientists of SAUs and ICAR institutes, benefitting over 600 professionals across the country.
