A student of APG University, Shimla has come under police scrutiny following a complaint alleging that he was posing as a member of the Kinnar (transgender) community and seeking money at temples and markets in the city.
According to the complaint received by police, the individual, who identifies himself as a Bangladeshi Muslim on his social media profile, was घूम रहा था in a different appearance across Shimla. It was alleged that he visited Kali Bari Temple and was also seen in Lower and Middle Bazaars wearing a saree and asking people for money.
During investigation, police identified the person as Islam Mohammad Shahidul, son of Mohammad Sharif Ali, a native of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, currently residing in Shimla. He is pursuing BJMC at APG University (2024–2028 batch) and is currently in the 4th semester.
On questioning, the student told police that he belongs to the Kinnar community and is a devotee of Goddess Kali. He said he visits temples like Kali Bari and Jakhu Temple, especially during Navratri, and moves around markets for religious purposes.
Police clarified that no formal complaint has been received accusing him of forcibly extorting money. However, he admitted that he accepts money if people offer it voluntarily.
Authorities also verified his documents, including passports, student visa (Type S-1), stay visa, national ID card, university fee records, and educational certificates, all of which were found to be valid.
Police said that further investigation into the matter is ongoing.
