Solan (Arki), January 24:
In a remarkable example of innovation in hill agriculture, Gagan Sharma, a progressive young farmer from Bhumti in Arki region of Solan district, has successfully grown the rare South American fruit Pepino (Pepino Melon / Solanum muricatum) in the hilly soil and climate of Himachal Pradesh.
Popularly known as “Pepino watermelon”, “Sweet Cucumber” and “Tree Melon”, the fruit is gaining attention for its unique appearance and taste. The Pepino fruit is yellow in colour with attractive purple stripes, and has a flavour that many describe as a blend of melon and pear.
Apart from its distinct taste, Pepino is also considered highly nutritious. It helps keep the body hydrated and is rich in potassium and Vitamin B, while also containing antioxidant properties. The fruit is also said to be suitable for diabetic patients, making it a healthy addition to modern diets.
Residents of Bhumti and Arki have praised Sharma’s efforts, calling it a proud moment for the entire area. His success is being seen as a strong message that with new thinking and modern farming approaches, even village soil can produce exceptional results.
