On the occasion of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a district level programme was organised at the Bachat Bhawan Auditorium here today, which was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Shimla Anupam Kashyap.
In his address, the Deputy Commissioner called upon the youth to stay away from drugs and spread awareness about its ill effects in the society. He said that drugs are hollowing out the society from within and to eradicate it from its roots, the administration, society, parents and youth will have to work together. He said that it is possible to get addicted to drugs just by trying it once, therefore the youth should keep every kind of distance from drugs.
While communicating directly with the students, he said that all of you are the future of our country and state. He said that development of our knowledge is possible only through education, therefore all students should develop the habit of reading in their daily life. He said that dialogue is the only solution against drug abuse. All children will have to establish dialogue with their parents so that no child turns to drugs.
In the programme, students from various schools of Shimla city presented their views through painting, slogan writing and speech competitions.

During this, experts gave detailed information on the causes, effects and prevention measures of drug addiction, in which Deputy Medical Superintendent IGMC Dr. Praveen S Bhatia and DSP Police Headquarters Vijay Raghuvanshi put forth their views. During the program, drug warriors Rakesh Sharma and Duni Chand, who came out of the quagmire of drug addiction, also shared their views.
The Deputy Commissioner administered the oath on drug prevention to all the people present and launched the signature campaign.
The Deputy Commissioner honoured the winning students of the competition.
District Welfare Officer Kapil Sharma welcomed the chief guest and informed him about the activities being conducted for drug prevention.

In the speech competition, Khushboo from Government Senior Secondary School, Tootikandi got first place, Anvesha from PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya Jakhu got second place and Aryan from Government Senior Secondary School, Tootikandi got third place.
In the slogan writing competition, Mehak from SD Senior Secondary School got first place, Azad from SD Senior Secondary School got second place and Manreet from St. Thomas School got third place.
In the painting competition, Anishka from SD Senior Secondary School got first position, Manvi Das from SD Senior Secondary School got second position and Itmon from Government Senior Secondary School, Tutikandi got third position.
District Public Relations Officer Simple Saklani, District Language Officer Anil Harta and Tehsil Welfare Officer Surendra Bhimta played their role in the jury.
