Shimla
Bishop Cotton School, Shimla celebrated the 165th anniversary Speech Day on the first flat with a march past with the school band and the NCC parade, and then afterwards in the historic Irwin Hall, where the awards were handed out.
The occasion was also a moment to remember two great friends of BCS who had passed away the day before: Mr DC Anand OC and Mrs Sunita John. As Head of Auckland House for 26 years, Mrs John was kind and compassionate but also a formidable educator, and Mr D C Anand a BCS legend. As one of our most successful alumni he was the pioneering founder of a multi-billion dollar industry. Our longest serving Governor. The man who turned the Old Cottonians into the immense organization it is today.
The school was delighted to welcome the DGP, Himachal Pradesh, Dr Verma to award prizes at Speech Day. As ever, these recognised both effort and achievement in both the academic and co-curricular fields. In his speech, Dr Verma was keen to point out that the character developed is the factor most likely to ensure success in later life.
BCS Director Mr Simon Weale said: “My philosophy is that the carrot usually works much better than the stick. A smiling child achieves more than a scared one. External discipline has its uses, but ultimately our boys must develop internal discipline to cope with the challenges that life will throw at them and if they leave school without having internal discipline then we are not doing our job. Each boy must enjoy a range of experiences and challenges that test them and allow the boys to realise what they are really capable of.”
The School celebrates all of the prize winners from the academically gifted to those who approach life wholeheartedly – the true 100% toppers.
