Belletristic, the literary society of the Department of English, Shoolini University, organised a special lecture on “How do you read poetry?” by Professor Manju Jaidka, Head of the Department. The panel consisted of Professor M L Raina, a noted literary scholar, as well as the faculty members of Shoolini University, Purnima Bali, Neeraj Pizar and Sakshi Sundaram.
Professor Jaidka started the session with a few thought-provoking questions like what does it exactly mean to be analysing a poetry? Does it kill its poetic value? And what are the reasons why we analyze poetry? Moving on step by step, she explained how to critically examine a poem, right from the major indicators like genre, setting, form, and the structural aspects, emotional aspects, and what the speaker and poem represent. Quoting liberally from various sources, a lot of other issues were discussed in detail.
Prof. M L Raina also gave his insights and valuable remarks on the topic, followed by a short discussion and a question-answer session.
