Students gain practical insights into hydroelectric power generation and plant operations
Ropar: The Department of Electrical Engineering at Baddi University of Emerging Sciences and Technology organized an industrial visit for students of 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th semesters to a hydro power plant at Anandpur Sahib in Ropar district on February 19, 2026.
The visit aimed to provide students with practical insights into hydroelectric power generation, plant operations, transmission systems, and the major components used in hydropower stations.
During the visit, students learned about the overall layout and functioning of a hydro power plant, including water intake systems, turbines, generators, control rooms, and switchyard operations. They were introduced to the working principles of hydro turbines and generators that convert hydraulic energy into electrical energy.
Students also gained an understanding of protection systems used to safeguard equipment from overloads, faults, and system failures. Experts at the facility highlighted the importance of safety measures while handling high-voltage equipment and managing water flow control systems.
The industrial tour also helped students understand important aspects of power generation, voltage regulation, and grid integration in large-scale hydropower projects.
Industry professionals at the plant interacted with the students and provided guidance on career opportunities in the power generation sector, essential technical skills required for hydroelectric projects, and industry expectations from electrical engineers.
The visit proved to be an enriching experience, enabling students to connect theoretical concepts with real-world engineering applications.
