Chandigarh, 17February
HIV infections in Chandigarh have recorded a sharp rise, with 166 new cases reported over the past year — marking a staggering 102 per cent increase compared to the previous year. The data was presented in the Rajya Sabha by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The number of deaths linked to HIV has also doubled during the same period, raising concerns among health authorities. As per official figures, nearly one in every 208 residents in the city is currently living with HIV.
Health officials stated that the majority of HIV-positive individuals are receiving treatment at PGIMER (Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research) and other government civil hospitals in the city. Notably, around 45 per cent of those affected are employed, underscoring that HIV cuts across professions, social backgrounds, and economic groups.
Medical experts have emphasized the urgent need for early detection, routine testing, and timely access to treatment. They also stressed the importance of eliminating stigma and discrimination, which often prevent individuals from seeking diagnosis and care.
Globally, the United Nations has set a target to eliminate HIV as a public health threat by 2030 under the ambitious 90-90-90 strategy — ensuring that 90 per cent of people living with HIV know their status, 90 per cent of those diagnosed receive sustained treatment, and 90 per cent of those on treatment achieve viral suppression.
Public health authorities in Chandigarh are urging citizens to adopt safe practices, undergo regular testing, and participate in awareness initiatives to curb the spread of the infection.
Experts maintain that with community participation, strengthened healthcare systems, and informed public action, the rising trend can be reversed.
