Patients in the state no longer have to travel abroad to accurately measure bone strength and density. A state-of-the-art DEXA machine has been installed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bilaspur, at a cost of approximately ₹2.25 crore (approximately $2.25 million). This facility is the first in the state. The introduction of this facility at AIIMS, Bilaspur, will not only relieve patients of the hassle of traveling abroad, but will also prevent serious illnesses in time and result in financial savings. This will benefit patients with conditions like osteoporosis and fractures by improving their quality of life. Previously, patients had to travel to Chandigarh or other major cities for bone-related tests. No other medical college in the state had this facility, but now the installation of this machine at AIIMS will provide significant relief, especially to the elderly, women, and patients with bone-related problems.
Accurate Diagnosis of Bone Diseases
The DEXA machine installed in the Endocrinology Department of AIIMS will enable bone density testing. This will allow for early detection of osteoporosis (weakening of the bones) and determine the patient’s risk of future fractures. It will also accurately assess the effectiveness of medications and therapies during treatment, and provide an accurate estimate of the duration of vitamin D and other medications. Previously, doctors used to prescribe medications based on estimates.
According to information, this machine will benefit men over 65 years of age, patients on steroid or cancer therapy, those with a history of repeated fractures, and those with chronic thyroid, kidney, and liver disease. The DEXA machine’s most significant advantage is its low radiation output, and the entire test is completed in just 5 to 15 minutes.
Dr. Dinesh Verma, Medical Superintendent of AIIMS Bilaspur, stated that the DEXA machine has been installed at AIIMS Bilaspur. With this machine, bone patients no longer have to travel to other states for treatment. AIIMS Bilaspur is striving to provide better healthcare facilities to the people of the state.
