Domestic parking facilities in Shimla are once again under scrutiny as residents allege that overcharging continues unabated despite earlier assurances from the Municipal Corporation.
The controversy relates to a municipal parking site operating under an official tender in the Bharari area. Residents claim that although the Municipal Corporation had fixed monthly parking rates under the approved tender, the contractor is allegedly charging nearly double the prescribed amount.
According to the tender terms, the approved monthly domestic parking charges are ₹600 for small vehicles, ₹800 for big vehicles, and ₹300 for two-wheelers. However, locals allege that the contractor is demanding significantly higher payments and, in some cases, additional money under the pretext of “security charges.”
Assurances Given, But No Action Yet
Earlier, residents had raised the issue publicly and sought intervention from the Municipal Corporation. The Municipal Commissioner had reportedly assured that an inquiry would be conducted and strict action would follow if overcharging was found.
However, residents now allege that no concrete action has been taken so far. They claim that even after repeated complaints, the situation remains unchanged and the contractor continues to demand excess payment.
Tender Rules Provide for Strict Penalty
As per the parking tender conditions, overcharging can attract penalties including heavy fines and even cancellation of the contract in case of repeated violations. Residents argue that if the allegations are verified, strict enforcement of these provisions is necessary to prevent exploitation.
Demand for Immediate Intervention
Local residents have urged the Municipal Corporation to conduct an on-spot inspection, verify complaints, and ensure that the officially approved rates are displayed prominently at the parking site.
They have also demanded transparency and accountability to restore public trust, warning that continued inaction may lead to further agitation.
The Municipal Corporation’s response to the fresh allegations is awaited.
