HP- PERC holds conclave on Higher Education

Himachal Pradesh Governor Mr Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has said that institutions should prepare students not for what industry needs but should prepare them for what the society needs.
He was addressing a conclave on Higher Education on “Future of Learning and Jobs” organised by the Himachal Pradesh Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Commission (HPPERC) here on Saturday.
The Governor said that our education system has been producing job seekers while the need was to prepare students to be job givers. There is need to modify the syllabus and pedagogy to inculcate the spirit of entrepreneurship, he added.
Mr Arlekar pointed out that our culture and heritage has been environmental friendly. “We have various traditions like conducting puja of trees which reflect the respect that was given to environment in our culture”, he said and added that we must integrate our culture with modern curriculum.
He stressed that there was urgent need for ruralisation rather than urbanisation and urged educationists to discuss and deliberate on the New Education Policy 2020.
Earlier, Chairman, HP-PERC, Maj Gen Atul Kaushik welcomed the Governor and other delegates and highlighted the objective of organising the conclave. He expressed the hope that institutions of higher education would benefit from the deliberations at the conclave.
The conclave was organised by the Commission with support from Shoolini University, Chitkara University, Baddi University, Abhilashi University and Sri Sai University. Vice Chancellor, Shoolini University, Prof Atul Khosla, presented the context setting for the conclave.
Delivering the keynote address, former Punjab Chief Secretary Mr Karan Avtar Singh spoke on the need for carbon neutrality and how these would impact future jobs. Productions systems using carbon intensive production would end in 30 or 50 years, he said and added that the world has to move away from carbon intensive to carbon neutral or negative practices.
He said that future jobs would not be in corporates but in start ups and asserted that India would become centre of recycled plastic. He also placed emphasis on data analysis.
Vice-Chancellors, Deans, Principals and Heads of the Higher Education Institutions from all across the state of Himachal Pradesh attended the conclave and exchange ideas on the future or higher education in the new environment.
The focus of the conclave was on the issues such as Impact of Technology on Jobs, Climate Change and Job Scenario, Learning and New Pedagogy and Alternate Thinking. Renowned speakers from different fields were invited to share their insights and knowledge on the selected aspects of the conclave.
