Akhil Bhartiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh (ABRSM) organised an online program on 28 December 2020 on the Relevance of Human Rights in Educational institutions. Shri Om Prakash Vyas, Deputy Registrar at National Human Rights Commission was the invited speaker. Shri Vyas initiated his talk with the essence of Human Rights integral to our culture and heritage.
He presented the historical timeline of Human Rights as a concern, from the initiation of League of Nations and Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Shri Vyas informed that our constitution had many similarities with the UDHR and it ensures Civil, Political, economical, social and cultural rights. He said that poeple are more sensitised about civil and political rights out of the five types of rights of an individual. He foccussed on differentiating between fundamental and human rights.
Vyas explained that Human Rights are related to life, Liberty, equality and dignity of an individual which are guaranteed by the constitution. He laid a lot of emphasis on Article 21 of the Constitution vis a vis Human rights.
Vyas said that a teacher is a role model for its students and their conduct leaves lasting impression on the students. NHRC has dealt with many issues related to students, teachers and educational institutions. He informed that NHRC has been receiving many complaints regarding teachers not receiving their salaly during COVID circumstances in private institutions. He also elobrated on how NHRC has been helping some superannuated teachers, in receiving their terminal benefits. Shri Vyas said that educational institutions are of paramount importance as they prepare the future generations of the country.
He also encouraged the teachers to take up activism when required, to protect human rights. His lecture was followed by Question and Answer session.
President of ABRSM, Prof . JP Singhal appreciated the educative lecture given by Shri Vyas. Prof Singhal also highlighted various human right causes taken up by ABRSM in his concluding remarks.
