Shimla:
As weather conditions changed in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh, a fresh spell of snowfall accompanied by icy winds began, bringing much-needed relief to the drought-hit hill state. Sunday morning ushered in new hope as snowfall was reported from Rohtang Pass to the valleys of Lahaul-Spiti, turning the region into a winter spectacle.
Fresh Snow Covers Key High-Altitude Areas
The peaks of Lahaul-Spiti and Manali are now blanketed in snow. Heavy snowfall has been recorded at Kunzum Pass, Baralacha La, and in areas around the famous Chandratal Lake. Tourists visiting Shinkula Pass witnessed a mesmerizing scene as snowflakes welcomed them, making the experience truly magical.
Sharp Drop in Temperature, Yellow Alert Issued
The latest snowfall spell has intensified cold conditions across the state. Over the past 48 hours, both day and night temperatures have dropped by nearly 5 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Centre has issued advisories for the coming days.
A yellow alert has been issued for January 23 in several parts of the state, warning of heavy snowfall and rainfall. Cold wave conditions are likely on January 19 and 20 in low and mid-hill districts including Mandi, Bilaspur, Una and Hamirpur. Areas such as Manali, Bhuntar, Sundernagar and Bajaura have recorded the steepest fall in temperatures.
Drought-Hit Agriculture Seeks Relief
Himachal Pradesh has witnessed little to no rainfall over the past three-and-a-half months, severely impacting agriculture. Crops such as peas and mustard have suffered, while wheat fields have started turning yellow due to moisture stress.
In view of the prolonged dry spell, hotel operators in Dharamshala undertook a unique initiative. Members of the Hotel Association offered special prayers at the temple of Lord Indrunag, the rain deity, at Khaniyara, seeking rainfall to revive tourism and agriculture.
Western Disturbance Raises Hope
Weather experts have predicted that a fresh western disturbance will become active from January 22. Its impact is expected to bring widespread rain and snowfall across the state, likely ending the prolonged dry spell and bringing relief to farmers and orchardists.
