Shimla
Himachal Pradesh is set to face another spell of harsh weather as nature once again turns hostile. The Meteorological Centre, Shimla, has issued a warning stating that heavy rain and snowfall may return to the state over the next four days. Although parts of the state, including the capital Shimla, are currently witnessing clear skies, a fresh western disturbance is likely to become active from January 30.
According to the weather department, adverse conditions will prevail across most regions between January 31 and February 3. A Yellow Alert for heavy snowfall has been issued for February 1, urging people to remain cautious, especially in higher reaches.
The impact of the previous heavy snowfall continues to disrupt normal life and infrastructure. Four national highways, including the Manali–Leh and Rampur–Kinnaur routes, remain closed, along with over 800 roads across the state. Power and water supply have been severely affected, with nearly 3,000 transformers out of service and more than 100 drinking water schemes disrupted.
The situation is particularly grim in the tourist hub of Manali, where several villages have been facing prolonged power outages for over 18 hours. Hundreds of tourists remain stranded, adding to the mounting concerns.
In view of the deteriorating weather, educational institutions in Manali have been ordered to remain closed. Warnings have also been issued for possible avalanches in high-altitude areas. Meanwhile, reports of loss of life and property due to lightning strikes have emerged from Sirmaur district.
The administration is making continuous efforts to restore road connectivity, but dense fog alerts issued for the mornings and evenings of January 29 and 30 may hamper relief operations. Authorities have advised tourists and local residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from high-altitude regions until conditions improve.
