In the challenging terrain of Lahaul, where life is shaped by resilience and collective effort, Lahaul Basket has emerged as a symbol of sustainable Himalayan entrepreneurship. Led by Anita Nalwa, the brand has successfully connected traditional Lahauli wool and Himalayan medicinal herbs with modern markets.
Founded in 2003 as a self-help group, Lahaul Basket initially focused on Lahauli woollen socks. Strong financial discipline enabled the group to take and repay a ₹1.82 lakh loan from UCO Bank, laying a foundation of credibility and growth.
A major breakthrough came in 2019 with its association with the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), which opened doors to premium exhibitions and wider market exposure. Traditional products from the high Himalayas soon reached customers across the country.
In 2021, the initiative diversified beyond handloom through collaboration with NIFT Kangra under the ‘Secure Himalaya’ project, followed by specialised training in medicinal plants from RSETI Dharamshala and RCFC Jogindernagar.
Today, Lahaul Basket offers both traditional woollen products and value-added herbal items, marketed successfully on organised platforms. With over two decades of continuous operation and institutional support, Lahaul Basket stands as a compelling example of how local identity, skill development and market access can together create a self-reliant and sustainable Himalayan economy.
