Shimla, February 10
The Horticulture Department has started distributing fruit plants at the Horticulture Sales Centre, Mashobra.
Subject Matter Expert Dr Sharad Gupta said that around 5,300 persimmon (Japanese fruit) and apple plants have arrived in the first phase and are being given to farmers at government-approved rates. Persimmon plants are available for ₹150, while apple plants are being sold for ₹180 each.
He said that apple saplings are also being supplied directly to farmers from the department’s PCDO farms at Shilaru, Anu (Jubbal), and Dutt Nagar (Rampur Bushahr).
Dr Gupta advised farmers to prepare planting pits properly before planting. He said that adding well-rotted cow dung or compost to the pits is beneficial and proper drainage must be ensured to prevent damage to roots due to waterlogging.
He also said that kiwi plants require a proper support system and a balanced number of male and female plants. For persimmon and plum plants, proper spacing, adequate sunlight, and plant protection during the early years are important for good growth.
