Highlights Role of Literature in Preserving Cultural Heritage
Literature and theatre play a vital role in keeping languages alive and connecting younger generations with their cultural roots, says Governor
Jammu and Kashmir’s cultural heritage received a literary boost as HP Governor Kavinder Gupta released three books based on Dogri theatre, underlining the importance of regional languages and performing arts in preserving the region’s rich cultural identity.
The books, written, adapted and translated by noted theatre director, playwright and author Dr Sudhir Mahajan, are aimed at promoting the Dogri language and preserving the literary and cultural traditions of Jammu and Kashmir. The Governor described the publications as a valuable contribution towards strengthening the region’s linguistic and artistic heritage.
The three books include Trai Dogri Natak, Char Bal Natak and a collection of translated and adapted plays. Together, they bring nine plays covering a wide range of social, historical, philosophical and contemporary themes. Four of the plays are specially written for children and draw inspiration from stories associated with Nachiketa, Prahlad and Dhruv, along with the theme of true knowledge.
Congratulating Dr Mahajan on his contribution, Gupta emphasised that regional languages form an integral part of India’s civilisational heritage and cultural diversity. He said literature and theatre serve as powerful mediums for keeping languages vibrant while ensuring that younger generations remain connected to their cultural roots.
The Governor also highlighted the relevance of theatre in addressing contemporary social concerns, noting that literary works and stage performances can encourage reflection, communicate ideas and strengthen cultural awareness among audiences.
The publication of the three books is expected to enrich Dogri literature and provide readers, theatre practitioners and young audiences with greater access to plays rooted in the region’s language and traditions. The inclusion of children’s plays also underscores the importance of introducing cultural and moral narratives to younger generations.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Culture Minister and BJP vice-president Priya Sethi, Padma Shri awardee Mohan Singh, Padma Shri Dr Jitendra Udhampuri, and other prominent personalities from the fields of literature, culture and education attended the release ceremony.
The event highlighted the enduring significance of regional literature and theatre in safeguarding linguistic diversity and passing cultural traditions on to future generations.
