Shimla
The hearing on the appeal of Neelu Charani, convicted in the famous Gudiya rape and murder case of Himachal Pradesh, has been postponed to March 4 in the High Court. A CBI court in Shimla awarded life imprisonment to Neelu in the case. The accused had challenged his conviction and sentence in the High Court. The appeal was heard before a special bench of Justice Ajay Mohan Goel and Justice B C Negi. Both parties had sought time to argue the case.
According to the CBI charge sheet, Anil Kumar alias Neelu raped Gudiya on July 4, 2017 and later strangulated her to death. During the investigation, it was also revealed that there was an argument between Gudiya and the accused over spitting on Gudiya and there was a scuffle between the two.
The case made headlines when questions were raised on the initial investigation by the local police. Five people were detained on the basis of scientific evidence, but the CBI investigation convicted the accused, Neelu. This has become a subject of discussion not only in Himachal but also across the country. Now it has to be seen what decision comes on the appeal of the convict in the High Court.
