The Himachal Pradesh High Court has put an end to the state government’s delay strategy on Panchayat elections, directing that the entire election process be completed before April 30.
After hearing detailed arguments over three consecutive days, the court issued strict instructions, making it clear that further delay in electing local village bodies would not be tolerated. The ruling has triggered political activity across the state and sent a strong message on the autonomy of grassroots governance.
The court’s order comes as a setback to the state government led by Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, which had sought to defer the Panchayat elections by nearly six months. The High Court emphasized that timely elections are essential for democratic functioning at the village level.
