In Himachal Pradesh, the monsoon season is causing constant chaos. A cloudburst was observed in Pij village, Kullu district, this morning at approximately 3.30 am. As a result, the water level in the Shastri Nagar drain abruptly rose, causing a flash flood. Three or four cars that were parked in the sewer were damaged in this incident, and debris got into nearby homes. The fact that no lives were lost, however, was a comfort.
Meanwhile, the situation in Una district also deteriorated as a result of the rain that persisted into Tuesday night. In the Amb and Gagret subdivisions of the Una district, orders have been made to keep all educational institutions closed today. Due to the unfavorable weather and persistent rain, a vacation has been proclaimed in all schools in the Manali subdivision of the Kullu district for today.
People’s problems have been made worse by the state’s ongoing, intense rains in several areas. A landslide near Hanogi has halted the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway in the Mandi district since last night. It is anticipated that the roadway will be largely restored by midday, since the government began the process of clearing the debris in the morning. However, the other route to Kullu has also collapsed close to Kannauj, and its reopening could take a while. Additionally, there is a risk of earth subsidence on the roadway close to Dayod at Pandoh Dam, which is why traffic has been halted here.
The situation has gotten worse because of the constant rain in the Kangra area and the water discharged from the Pong Dam. Data made public by BBMB indicates that as of 7 a.m. on August 20, the dam’s water level was 1383.13 feet. The dam received 68,967 cusecs of water intake and discharged 61,878 cusecs of water in total. This resulted in the spillway releasing 44,422 cusecs of water and the turbine releasing 17,456 cusecs. As a result, the Beas River’s water level is steadily rising, and the risk has escalated in the Mand sections of the Fatehpur and Indora subdivisions.
The Meteorological Department reports that from August 24 to 27, Himachal Pradesh may see thunderstorms and strong to extremely heavy rains. The government has issued an orange alert for the whole state during this time. People have been cautioned by the government to avoid rivers and streams and to exercise caution while leaving their houses. While there is no warning for adverse weather on August 21, there will be a yellow notice for heavy rain on August 22 and 23.
