The first elevated heliport in Himachal Pradesh, located in Sanjauli, is finally going to be bustling with activity after being silent for almost three years. The most significant obstacle that had kept the facility grounded has been removed with the long-awaited clearance for flight operations from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The three-story heliport was launched in January 2022 after being constructed at a cost of more than ₹18 crore during the administration of Jai Ram Thakur. Its goal was obvious: to act as a lifeline in times of need, from medical evacuations to remote rescue missions. However, security concerns have prevented its utilisation up until now, despite its contemporary style and strategic location close to Shimla.
The Sanjauli heliport, which is spread over ten bighas, is not your typical landing pad. It has helicopter decks, safety netting, ticket booths, passenger cabins, parking for fifty cars, and a VVIP lounge. One of the few such buildings in India, it was constructed on an elevated concrete platform along the Sanjauli–Dhalli bypass route; the first was located in Rohini, Delhi.
Due to the requirement for qualified aviation officers and a thorough security audit, DGCA had previously denied clearance. Pawan Hans Ltd. was contacted by the Tourism Department, which oversees the heliport, and its professionals examined the location and approved it. “DGCA officials have inspected the heliport and issued the license for flight operations,” revealed Vivek Bhatia, director of tourism.
Heliports are the next best option for enhancing connectivity in Himachal, where it is challenging to construct big airports. Helicopters from Pawan Hans or other firms will be able to fly from Sanjauli once it is operational. The facility will assist with medical emergencies, tourist rescues, and VVIP mobility. It is an essential link for healthcare because of its close vicinity to IGMC Hospital, Chamiana Super Specialty Center, Women & Child Hospital, and Regional Cancer Center. Crucially, it will also work at night, increasing its usefulness.
But for the time being, Sanjauli is the center of attention. Himachal’s first elevated heliport, which promises quicker rescues, easier travel, and a new chapter in the state’s connectivity story, is finally prepared to take off after years of waiting.
