Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur strongly defended the Himcare health scheme, calling it a “lifeline” for thousands of cancer patients and other critically ill individuals across the state.
Speaking to mediapersons after listening to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat programme in Mandi, Thakur said that the Himcare scheme has provided free and timely treatment to over 11 lakh beneficiaries, including many cancer patients who otherwise could not afford expensive medical care.
He accused the present state government of spreading misinformation about the scheme and attempting to malign a welfare initiative that has saved countless lives. “Himcare has been a major support system for the poor and for those suffering from serious illnesses, especially cancer patients who require costly and long-term treatment,” he said.
Thakur rejected allegations of irregularities in the scheme, asserting that the previous BJP government had spent around ₹450 crore transparently for public welfare. He added that records of all beneficiaries are available and can be independently verified.
Highlighting its impact on cancer care, he said the Himcare card has enabled patients to access specialized treatment, surgeries, and hospitalization without financial burden. “For many families, this scheme has meant the difference between life and death,” he emphasized.
The Leader of Opposition also criticized Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for allegedly making misleading claims in the Assembly, stating that technical aspects of treatment packages were being misrepresented for political reasons.
Reaffirming his stance, Thakur said that attempts to discredit Himcare would not succeed, as people of the state are aware of its real benefits, particularly for those battling life-threatening diseases like cancer.
