Shimla, February 7: The Horticulture Department will begin the distribution of fruit plants to farmers at government-approved rates in Mashobra and Basantpur blocks from February 9.
Dr. Sharad Gupta, Subject Expert, Mashobra, informed that in the first phase, certified and disease-free plants of apple, persimmon (Japanese fruit), plum, apricot and kiwi will be provided to farmers. The rates have been fixed at Rs. 180 for apple (Gala variety), Rs. 90 for apricot, Rs. 150 for persimmon, Rs. 80 for plum and Rs. 100 for kiwi.
The distribution will follow a “first-come, first-served” basis. The department has urged interested farmers to contact their respective division offices to check plant availability as per their requirements.
Dr. Gupta said that considering the changing climatic conditions in hilly regions, alternative fruit crops like persimmon and kiwi have been included to encourage diversification beyond traditional apple cultivation.
He advised farmers to prepare planting pits in advance and mix well-rotted cow dung or compost in each pit for better growth. Proper drainage must be ensured to prevent waterlogging, which can damage roots. For kiwi cultivation, arranging a proper support system such as a trellis or bower system is essential, along with maintaining a balanced ratio of male and female plants. Persimmon and plum growers have also been advised to ensure proper spacing, adequate sunlight and early plant protection measures.
