In view of the rising number of road accidents in Himachal Pradesh, the state police headquarters has decided to take strict action against the misuse of high beam headlights. Following the example of Chandigarh and Delhi, the improper use of high beam lights in the state will now be treated as a form of dangerous driving.
Police officials stated that drivers found using high beam lights unnecessarily—especially during night driving—will face challans under the Motor Vehicles Act. In serious or repeated cases, driving licenses may also be suspended.
The department has advised motorists to use low beam lights while driving at night. Low beam provides sufficient visibility to the driver without causing inconvenience or temporary blindness to oncoming vehicles. On Himachal’s hilly and winding roads, high beam glare can be particularly hazardous, as it may momentarily impair the vision of approaching drivers, increasing the risk of accidents.
