The Center for Studies Related to Persons with Disabilities at Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla organized a Focus Group Discussion on Gender, Sexuality and Disability: Introspection of Law and Society in the Contemporary World. The event aimed to explore the intersections of gender, sexuality, and disability within the framework of contemporary legal and societal structures. The program commenced in the presence of Dr. Santosh Kumar Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs, Dr. Sachin Sharma, Director, Center for Studies related to Persons with Disability, Dr. Ruchi Raj Thakur, Dr. Ruchi Gupta, Dr. Rohit Sharma and Dr. Bharat Barowalia. Dr. Praveen Kumar, Assistant Professor (Management) and Dr. Ambika, Assistant Professor (Law) were the judges for the event. Students and faculty members were active participants in the event.
Participants engaged in dynamic discussions which included the challenges faced by LGBTQIA++ individuals, the imperative for stronger anti-bullying measures, the necessity of period leave policies, and the rising prominence of women in disability rights movements. Through case studies, relevant data, and legal provisions, participants shed light on critical issues demanding immediate attention. Insights shared during the discussion emphasized the importance of adopting intersectional approaches to advocacy and policy reform. The discussions underlined the need to recognize and protect the rights and needs of all individuals, ensuring inclusivity and social justice.
