SHIMLA 7 JAN 2026
Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur has strongly condemned the alleged raising of objectionable and indecent slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), terming the incident a “well-planned and disgraceful conspiracy.”
In a statement issued from Shimla, Thakur said the incident reflects the frustration of Leftist and Congress ideologies, which, he alleged, have lost public support and political relevance. He stated that in the name of freedom of expression, such malicious acts are not only condemnable but also damage the dignity of the country’s prestigious academic institutions.
Condemning the incident in strong words, the Leader of Opposition said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah enjoy immense public trust and have shown historic commitment to national service. He said that under Modi’s leadership, India has emerged as the world’s fourth-largest economy, governance has reached every citizen, and welfare schemes worth trillions of rupees have been running uninterrupted for the past 12 years. He added that under Amit Shah’s leadership, the country’s internal security has been strengthened and the Red Corridor of Naxalism has been reduced to a few kilometres, soon to be eliminated entirely.
Thakur said the country’s progress, growing strength and stability are troubling to some sections, who repeatedly resort to such acts out of frustration. He asserted that such negative actions will neither weaken national morale nor erode public confidence, adding that people have rejected such politics in the past and will continue to do so in the future. He also demanded a thorough investigation into the incident and strict action against those responsible to prevent educational institutions from becoming centres of political conspiracy and disorder.
Meanwhile, Jairam Thakur also strongly criticised the state government for increasing registration fees for residential plots and housing projects, calling the decision “anti-people.” He said that for disaster-hit residents of Himachal Pradesh, the dream of owning a home has already become difficult, and the present government is making it even more expensive.
He alleged that after sharply increasing building plan approval fees and allowing a rise in cement prices, the government has now increased registration fees for housing projects under RERA by four times, placing an additional financial burden on the public. Thakur said these decisions will directly affect the middle class, youth and disaster-affected families, making home construction and purchase even more challenging.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has strongly condemned the move, he said, adding that people now realise that under the pretext of “system change,” only inflation and hardships for the common man have increased. He urged the government to take decisions in public interest and stop undermining the dreams of the people.
