Shimla | January 24, 2026:
A one-day special workshop organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Jammu marked a significant step towards building a responsible and strong opposition in Jammu and Kashmir. The workshop aimed to provide training to newly elected BJP legislators on key legislative procedures, House discipline, and their constitutional responsibilities towards the public.
The session witnessed detailed discussions on good governance and the ideology of Antyodaya (upliftment of the last person). The main speaker, former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and current Leader of Opposition in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, Jairam Thakur, highlighted the BJP’s commitment to inclusive development and nation-building under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Addressing the legislators, Thakur shared his 28 years of experience as an MLA, Chief Minister, and Leader of Opposition, stating that his long legislative journey would help strengthen the skills of Jammu and Kashmir’s 29 BJP MLAs in effectively raising public issues in the Assembly.
Thakur also defined the role of the opposition, stating that a vigilant opposition must check anti-people policies, fight strongly for public concerns inside the House, and continuously engage with people to bring their aspirations to the legislature.
Speaking to the media later, he said the workshop provided fresh energy and strategic direction to the BJP legislative party, which would act as a watchdog to uphold democratic dignity and work towards development and fulfilling regional aspirations in Jammu and Kashmir.
BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh, along with several MLAs and party office-bearers, were also present at the workshop. Jairam Thakur was welcomed by Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma and MLA Arvind Gupta.
Earlier, Thakur visited the residence of late leader and former Nagrota MLA Devender Singh Rana, met his daughter, and expressed condolences to the bereaved family. He remembered Rana’s valuable contribution and described him as a simple and sensitive public leader whose values would continue to inspire people.
