To celebrate National Mathematics Day, the Department of Basic Sciences at Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, hosted an expert lecture for its undergraduate and postgraduate students. The event featured Dr. Shashi Kant Mishra, Senior Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, as the distinguished guest speaker. Dr. Manish Sharma, Dean of the College of Horticulture, was the chief guest for the occasion.
Dr. Mishra, the recipient of numerous academic awards, is a member of the Board of Studies and Academic Council at several prominent universities in India. During his lecture, titled ‘Optimization Tools for Decision-Making and the Application of Mathematics in Agricultural Sciences and Agribusiness Management,’ Dr. Mishra highlighted the rich history of mathematics in India, emphasized the importance of teamwork in mathematical pursuits, and discussed the contributions of renowned mathematicians worldwide. The session concluded with an engaging, interactive discussion with students.
The event was organized by Dr. Ashu Chandel and Dr. Rakesh Gupta, who welcomed the guests and participants. India observes National Mathematics Day every year on December 22 to commemorate the birth anniversary of the legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Established in 2012, National Mathematics Day celebrates Ramanujan’s extraordinary contributions to the field and acknowledges the critical role mathematics plays in daily life, from solving everyday problems to addressing complex scientific challenges. The event was a fitting tribute to both the legacy of Ramanujan and the importance of mathematics in shaping diverse fields of study, including agriculture and agribusiness.
