To generate more electricity in Shimla, the Shimla municipal corporation is going to set up a biomethination plant in Bharyal of the city.
Waste to generate power will be the first project in the country where methane gas will be produced from a biomethination plant. Around Rs 12 crore will be spent on this project, said Shimla Municipal Corporation Commissioner Bhupendra Attri.
He shared that 80 to 90 metric tons of garbage are generated daily in Shimla city and sent to the Bharyal garbage plant. M/s Elephant Energy Private Limited Company has set up a garbage plant in Bharyal, where we will generate the electricity. However, at present, its production is negligible. Due to the non-dispatchable source of electricity, the waste, i.e., RDF, of the plant has to be given to the cement companies.
According to the corporation, the reason for the non-dispatchable source of elwill production in the plant is the non-separation of wet and dry waste and less methane gas production due to a lack of plastic.
Now we are setting up a biomethination plant where methane gas will be produced. This gas will be blended into syngas. This will increase the plant’s capacity to generate electricity from waste, he shared.
The Municipal Corporation claims that with the setup of the plant, it will now be possible to generate up to 2.5 MW of electricity. Apart from Shimla city, garbage from adjoining panchayats, Ghanahatti, Kufri, and Shoghi areas is also taken to Bharayal.
Attri said approval for this project has been received from the government to set up a biomethination plant in Bharyal. Soon, Shimla will produce their own electricity, nearing 2.5 MW.
