– Successful treatment outcomes for several patients with gynaecological cancers –
Shimla, May 31, 2025: The Department of Gynae Oncology, Fortis Hospital Mohali, has treated several patients suffering from complex gynae cancers by offering personalised and the most advanced cancer care. Dr Shweta Tahlan, Consultant, Gynae Onco-Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Mohali, has conducted open surgeries and minimally-invasive surgical procedures using the world’s most advanced 4th Generation Robot – Da Vinci Xi.
Giving information during a press conference organised here today, Dr Tahlan, said, “At Fortis Hospital Mohali, we are committed to providing advanced and patient-centric care for women diagnosed with gynaecological cancers of the ovary, uterus, cervix, and uncommon cancers such as sarcomas and vulvar. With a focus on preserving the quality of life while achieving excellent oncological outcomes, we continue to offer cutting-edge treatments tailored to the unique needs of each patient. This requires expert surgical judgment, multi-disciplinary coordination, and personalized planning to ensure the best possible outcomes.”
In the first case, an 84-year-old woman with uterine cancer and pre-existing heart disease underwent a successful robot-assisted cancer surgery. The minimally invasive nature of robotic surgery ensured reduced blood loss, smaller incisions, and faster recovery. The patient resumed her normal routine within three days of the surgery.
Discussing the case, Dr Tahlan, said, “Robot-assisted surgery is especially beneficial for elderly and high-risk patients, allowing major cancer operations to be performed with enhanced safety and precision.”
In another case, a 20-year-old woman presented at Fortis Mohali with a large ovarian mass (20x25cm), where she was diagnosed with early-stage uncommon ovarian cancer. To help preserve her fertility, Dr Tahlan conducted fertility-sparing surgery on the patient wherein her uterus and other ovary was preserved while ensuring complete removal of the tumour. The patient had a smooth, post-operative recovery and following the procedure, her menstrual cycles returned to normal. The case reflects how timely intervention and expert surgical care could allow the woman to retain her fertility after a cancer diagnosis.
In yet another case, a 60-year-old patient with advanced-stage ovarian cancer underwent extensive Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) followed by Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC)—a cutting-edge treatment that offers substantial survival benefits in advanced disease. Her post-operative recovery was rapid and uneventful. This type of complex procedure can only be performed in high-end tertiary care centers with experienced surgical teams and dedicated ICU support such as Fortis Mohali.
Dr Tahlan further added, “Gynaecologic oncology is a dedicated subspecialty that combines expert surgical care with personalized treatment protocols. At Fortis Mohali, each treatment plan is formulated based on the type and stage of cancer, histopathology, molecular classification, patient age, and individual medical needs.”
