The Pong Dam’s water level has been seen to have significantly increased. The Pong reservoir’s water level was 1361.07 feet at 6 a.m. on Saturday, compared to 1328.45 feet on the same day last year (2 August 2024). In other words, the water level is 32.62 feet higher this year. By 6 am, an average inflow of 87,586 cusecs of water was observed in the dam. Currently, only the Pong Power House’s turbines—whose capacity has been set at 18,995 cusecs—are used to drain water from the dam.
For the past several days, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted intense rainfall in the Beas River’s catchment region. If the water inflow keeps going in this direction, more water can be discharged by opening the Pong Dam’s spillway gates to maintain equilibrium.
In light of this possible scenario, BBMB has notified the relevant agencies of flood control, drainage, irrigation, and civil administration. In order to prevent any form of damage or loss of life in the downstream districts, the local authority has been asked to take the required precautions immediately.
Residents in the downstream and surrounding regions of the dam have been urged to abide by the rules set out by the administration and to call the closest control or relief room in the event of an emergency. According to the dam administration, all required steps are being taken to maintain control over the water level, and the situation is being continuously monitored.
