Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has left the final decision on the Rajya Sabha candidate to the Congress high command following his meetings in Delhi. During his visit, he met Mallikarjun Kharge, K. C. Venugopal and Rajni Patil and shared his feedback.
It was decided in the meeting that the list of Rajya Sabha candidates would be finalized by Tuesday evening and sent to the state government. Due to the Holi holiday on March 4, nominations for Himachal Pradesh’s lone Rajya Sabha seat will now be filed on March 5.
There is speculation that the Congress may field a candidate from outside Himachal, possibly among national spokespersons or party in-charges. However, after the Delhi meeting, discussions have also intensified about a cabinet minister being nominated. Earlier, names such as Pratibha Singh and Kaul Singh Thakur were being discussed.
The BJP is expected to announce its candidate only after Congress finalizes its nominee. The seat is falling vacant following the completion of the term of BJP MP Indu Goswami.
