Shimla, March 8, 2026:
International Women’s Day, a “Run for Women” event was successfully organised at the athletics stadium of Bishop Cotton School by Mera Yuva Bharat, Shimla, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. The programme was held in collaboration with Fit India Movement, Sports Authority of India and the Department of Youth Services and Sports, Government of Himachal Pradesh.
The event was organised under the ASMITA (Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action) initiative, which is an important part of the Khelo India Women’s League. The initiative aims to promote the participation of women and girls in sports, spread awareness about physical fitness and strengthen sports culture in society. A large number of young girls and women enthusiastically participated in the programme.
Races of 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres were organised in three age categories — Under-13 years, 13–18 years and 18 years and above. Besides the races, several creative and recreational activities were also conducted for the participants.
On the occasion, Geetanjali Thakur, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Staff Officer, Southern Range, attended the programme as the Chief Guest. Addressing the participants, she encouraged women and girls to actively participate in sports and adopt a healthy and fit lifestyle.
Distinguished guests included Matthew John, Principal of Bishop Cotton School, Parveen Dharma, Administrative Officer, and Gurpreet Singh, Sports Director of Bishop Cotton School. Anurag Verma, District Youth Services and Sports Officer (Headquarters), Department of Youth Services and Sports, Government of Himachal Pradesh, also attended the event as a special guest.
