An e-Seminar was organised by School of Law at Shoolini University to celebrate 70th Anniversary of the Constitution of India on the National Law Day. The Seminar was organised in collaboration with HP State Commission for Women.
The theme for the Seminar was Gender Studies and Women Empowerment.
Prof. Pam Rajput, Professor Emeritus, Panjab University, Chandigarh, and United Nation Women Advisory Committee (India) and Chair Women 20, India, an Engagement Group of G20 was the Chief Guest along with Justice SS Thakur, Former Judge High Court of HP, and Advisor School of Law. The Keynote address was delivered by Prof. Rattan Singh from Panjab University.
About 100 delegates from premiere institutions of India participated in the Seminar. Delegates from Jamia Milia Islamia, UPES, NALSAR, NLU, ICFAI, HPNLU, AMU, Symbiosis and many more were among the participants.
Prof. P.K. Khosla, Vice Chancellor, Shoolini University shared his thoughts and welcomed Prof. Pam Rajput.
The Chief Guest addressed the delegates and shared the need for Women empowerment even in the 21st century. Prof. Rajput emphasised on the need for a united attack on male chauvinism. She stressed that the judiciary, legislature and the public at large need to work in consonance so that the outlook towards women gets reformed for better. Her anecdote on the Status of Women Report 2015 being titled as “Samanta – Ek Shatabadi Aur” hit hard and resonated among the delegates to the core.
Prof Rattan stressed on the need for the males to be psychologically empowered. He said that it is the male section of the society that needs to grow up and shun the jingoism which has been prevalent for centuries. Directing his focus on the Constitution, Prof. Rattan expressed that the ideals of Constitution could only progress if its subject progress.
Dr Upneet Lali, Director Institute of Correctional Administration, Chandigarh was the Guest of Honour. She spoke on the triple subjugation of women. Dr. Lali voiced out the gender, caste and class bias which the women have been suffering for so long. Her concern about the status quo that even the empowered women have had to approach the judiciary to force their rights brought concurrence from everyone alike.
Dr Daisy Thakur, Chairman, HP State Commission for Women was also present as the event was conducted in collaboration with the commission. Dr Daisy shared her experiences during which she witnessed major loopholes in the implementation of women centric laws. She stressed on the positive application of the laws on the ground level. Further, she implored resolve from everyone in changing the way the children think about women and the way girl child is treated in the family and society at large.
Convener of the Colloquium Prof (Dr.) Nandan Sharma, Head School of Law proposed the concept note and presented the seminar report in the valedictory occasion. He informed that two technical session were held in which about 40 delegates presented their research papers. The word Scientific Temper has been taken from Nehruvian concept way back in 1946 but stands equally important even after 74 years in the light of various Superstitions and beliefs and strike our country.
Prof (Dr.) NK Gupta, Dean School of Law also shared the panel and shared his valuable insights. He asked for strong and speedy implementation for women rights. He denounced the dogmatic mentality of the society preferring male child and emphasised the need for more social security schemes for the old so that the male child favoured mind-set could be changed.
Justice SS Thakur gave the concluding remarks as Chief Guest of Valedictory Ceremony. He emphasized on the need for greater participation of women in the law making process since only a woman would truly know the needs of other women.
