Shimla
The menace of stray dogs and monkeys is steadily increasing in the state capital, Shimla. The situation is becoming increasingly serious for public safety.
On Wednesday, the Shimla Nagrik Sabha held a vigorous protest outside the District Magistrate’s office. The Assembly strongly criticized the Shimla Municipal Corporation, stating that the corporation has so far failed to take concrete action to address this serious problem.
The protesters clearly demanded compensation of 1 lakh rupees to victims of dog and monkey bites. They also demanded the construction of dog huts in the city to control stray dogs. They also demanded that an FIR be filed against those who feed bread or food to dogs and monkeys in the open.
Sabha Secretary Jagmohan Thakur said that the Supreme Court has also directed that huts should be built for dogs. If someone wants to feed dogs out of religious beliefs, there should be a designated place for it. Feeding dogs in the open increases both their numbers and aggression, which poses a threat to public safety.
He alleged that the Municipal Corporation’s efforts are inadequate. The number of monkeys and dogs in public places, markets, and residential areas should be reduced. The Nagarik Sabha also submitted a memorandum to the Municipal Corporation Commissioner in this regard and warned that if concrete action is not taken soon, the movement will be intensified.
