Shimla: Drug addiction is becoming a major concern in Shimla district, especially among the youth. Officials have confirmed that seven young people have tested HIV-positive after repeatedly reusing and sharing syringes for drug consumption.
The matter came to light during a meeting of the District Community Resource Group, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap, where rising HIV cases in the district were discussed.
According to reports, HIV infections are continuously being detected in Shimla, and the situation is worrying. A major concern raised in the meeting was that 31 children, including minors up to 18 years of age, have also been identified as HIV-positive. These children fall under the CABA (Children Affected by AIDS) category.
During the meeting, officials reviewed various prevention schemes and awareness campaigns aimed at controlling HIV/AIDS in the district. DC Kashyap expressed serious concern over the spreading risk of HIV through syringe sharing and urged citizens to get HIV tests done regularly. He also appealed to parents to keep a close watch on their children and ensure they stay away from drugs and syringe use.
The Health Department stated that early detection and timely treatment can help HIV patients live a normal and healthy life. Government health centres are providing free ART (Anti-Retroviral Therapy) and other required medicines for HIV-positive children and patients. Officials also assured that the identity of patients remains confidential to protect them from social discrimination.
Meanwhile, the District AIDS Prevention and Control Committee reported that Shimla has recorded a total of 333 HIV-positive cases so far. Authorities, along with NGOs, are continuing efforts to remove stigma, fight misinformation, and support HIV-affected individuals in returning to a normal social life.
