Shimla, February 27:
An alleged promotional video shared by Shimla SDM Oshin Sharma has sparked controversy in Himachal Pradesh, prompting the state government to order an official inquiry.
Sharma, who is currently posted in the state capital, is accused of promoting a private company’s fitness-related product through a video shared on her official social media account. The video, reportedly targeting gym-goers, triggered objections soon after it surfaced online, with several users alleging a violation of Civil Services Conduct Rules.
As the controversy gained momentum, a formal complaint was submitted to the government. Taking cognisance of the matter, Chief Secretary Sanjay Gupta has directed the concerned department to conduct a probe. He confirmed that a complaint has been received and appropriate action will be taken as per rules.
Critics have cited Rule 15(1) of the Civil Services Conduct Rules, which bars government employees from engaging in any trade, business or other profit-making activity without prior approval.
Following the backlash, Sharma removed the video from her social media account. However, the issue continued to draw attention due to her significant online presence. She has over 3.7 lakh followers on Facebook, 3.74 lakh on Instagram and around 65,000 subscribers on YouTube.
Officials said the matter is under examination and further action, if any, will depend on the findings of the inquiry report.
