The Shivdham project, proposed for Kangnidhar in Mandi, was intended to increase religious tourism in the region by providing an appealing location for both pilgrims and visitors. But, now, the project has been halted for the past two years owing to a lack of suitable funds.
The plan entailed developing world-class infrastructure, including temples, spiritual centers, and recreational facilities, with the purpose of strengthening the tourist industry in Mandi, an area noted for its scenic landscapes and religious importance. The project was launched by the BJP-led administration of Jai Ram Thakur, which allocated an initial payment of Rs 40 crore to begin construction. The project made early progress, with building work starting at the specified site. However, soon before the 2022 Assembly elections, the project was unexpectedly suspended, citing a lack of funding. Work on the grandiose enterprise has been halted ever since.
This abrupt halt has left Mandi region locals upset, as they had hoped that the project would not only draw pilgrims but also create considerable employment possibilities and boost the local economy.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who took office in December 2022, has underlined his determination to complete the Shivdham project. Sukhu announced a further Rs 100 crore grant for Shivdham’s development. His declaration sparked confidence in the region, as many thought that the new administration would prioritize the project. Despite the promise of cash, there has been little visible development at the building site.
Residents, particularly those in the tourist sector, are concerned about the project’s development delays. Mandi, which is already a prominent tourist destination due to its natural beauty and religious monuments, might gain greatly from the Shivdham project. Local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and souvenir stores, anticipated an increase in tourism after the project was done, especially since the region is home to numerous major religious monuments that draw thousands of pilgrims each year.
OP Kapoor, president of the Citizens’ Council Mandi, claimed that the Shivdham project has the potential to significantly strengthen Mandi’s status as a religious tourist destination. The neighborhood, which has long been recognized for its temples and spiritual value, may witness an inflow of pilgrims and visitors if the infrastructure is built as planned.
However, he warned that without a fast resume of building, the project risks losing pace and the projected economic advantages for the local community may not be realized.
According to Kapoor, Kangnidhar, where this project is intended, was originally known as Mandi’s oxygen cylinder because to the surrounding forest foliage. It was demolished as part of this big endeavor. Now, the state government must focus on completing this project in a timely way.
Former minister and BJP MLA from Mandi Sadar Anil Sharma revealed that he recently discussed this matter in the Vidhan Sabha, and the Chief Minister promised to complete the project. The state government has allocated a provision for this in its budget.
Meanwhile, inhabitants of Mandi expect that the project will be restored soon, ushering in a new era of growth and wealth for the district’s tourism business.
With the state government’s pledge of Rs 100 crore, the next few months will be critical in determining whether Shivdham becomes a landmark destination or remains an unfulfilled dream for Mandi’s tourist industry.
