JUIT,Waknaghat,December12,2023-TheSIAM(Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) JUIT Chapter hosted it’s 6th Distinguished Speaker Seminar with Dr.George Birosonthetopic“Fast Algorithms and Machine Learning”.
Dr. George Biros, the distinguished W. A. “Tex” Moncrief Chair in Simulation-Based Engineering Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, is a prominent figure in computational engineering and sciences. Holding full professor appointments in mechanical engineering and computer scenic ,he has made significant contributions throughout his career, including serving as an Associate Professor at Georgia Techandan Assistant Professorat the University of Pennsylvania. Dr.Biros’s expertise spans fast numerical methods and parallel algorithms, particularly in data analysis and simulation, with notable achievements in medical image analysis and its integration with biophysical modelling. His groundbreaking work extends to the development of fast algorithms for simulating complex fluids, showcasing a multidisciplinary approach. Recognized for his excellence, Dr. Biros was part of a team that received the prestigious IEEE/ACM SC03 and SC10 Gordon Bell Awards, highlighting his dedication to advancing computational science and engineering .
For the seminar at JUIT he discussed the field of SciML (Scientific Machine Learning), he began the discussion by discussing the need for the field and how it differs from typical machine learning we are familiar with. He then introduced us to one of the key features of sci ml :ROMs(Reduced Order Models)after doing through the theory behind it, he then showed us a few applications of the said ROMs namely in brain tumour modelling ,particle separation in a stokes an fluid and the creation of crystals on an area of melted metal .
Council member Vanshi Goyal then started the Question and Answer section of the seminar , the speaker answered the queries of the audience, with great patience anddeepsincerity.Thesessionendedwithanintellectualdiscussionbetweenthespeaker and the Vice Chancellor of JUIT, Dr. R.K. Sharma. We are happy to report that the session was a huge success. More than 80 students and teachers attended this session which was later praised by the HoD of CSE-IT and VC of JUIT.
This event couldn’t be the success it was without the guidance and support of our vice chancellor ,Dr.R.K.Sharma,our faculty advisor ,Prof.(Dr.)Vivek Kumar Sehgal, and the SIAM JUIT Chapter Council.
