Shimla
After a long wait, the valleys of Himachal Pradesh have finally been draped in a fresh white blanket of snow. The season’s first snowfall in Shimla and other higher reaches has not only intensified the chill in the air but also brought much-needed relief to farmers and orchardists battling a prolonged dry spell. After nearly 90 days of dry conditions, the snowfall is being seen as nothing less than a “lifeline” for the thirsty land.
Strong icy winds and a sharp drop in temperatures have gripped the state. Areas including Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kinnaur, and Kufri witnessed severe weather as snowstorms with winds reaching around 40 kmph disrupted normal life. Most parts of the state are currently under the impact of a cold wave, with temperatures falling several degrees below zero.
The snowfall has sparked fresh hope in both tourism and agriculture. Hoteliers expect a rise in tourist footfall in popular snow destinations like Kufri and Narkanda, giving a much-needed boost to the sluggish tourism industry. Meanwhile, apple growers have welcomed the snowfall, calling it crucial for improving crop quality and ensuring better yield.
Amid the snowfall, the local administration in Manali has issued strict safety advisories, warning of near “red alert-like” conditions. Authorities have cautioned that roads have become extremely slippery with poor visibility, making driving risky. Tourists and residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors. In emergencies, only 4×4 vehicles are being advised for movement. Departments concerned with power and water supply have been placed on high alert to maintain essential services.
According to the Meteorological Centre, the weather activity is expected to continue for the next 24 hours. Moderate snowfall is likely in higher areas, while lower regions may witness heavy rainfall, further intensifying the cold in the coming days.
