Shimla:
For the first time, a special vaccination campaign against cervical cancer will be launched by the government, with door-to-door surveys beginning from March 1, 2026, through ASHA workers to identify eligible girls.
The decision was discussed in a meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap in Shimla. It was informed that the nationwide vaccination campaign is proposed to start from March 29, 2026, and vaccinations will be conducted every Sunday for a period of three months.
What is Cervical Cancer?
Cervical cancer occurs in the cervix (the lower part of the uterus) and is primarily caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). It is most common among women aged 30–50 years and is transmitted through sexual contact. Globally, it is the fourth most common cancer among women, while in India it is the second most common.
According to health data, nearly 1.2–1.3 lakh new cases of cervical cancer are reported annually in India, with approximately 75,000–80,000 women diagnosed each year. Experts state that HPV vaccination and regular screening can significantly prevent the disease. Vaccination at an early age offers the best protection before exposure to the virus.
Eligibility and Vaccine Details
As per guidelines of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, girls who have completed 14 years but are below 15 years of age are eligible for the vaccination. The campaign will cover all eligible girls, including migrant and destitute beneficiaries.
A single 0.5 ml dose of the HPV vaccine (Gardasil) will be administered in the upper left arm. The vaccine is considered safe and effective and has been approved by national and international health authorities. It is estimated that vaccination can prevent up to 83 percent of cervical cancer cases.
Women are also advised to undergo screening at 35 and 45 years of age, as early detection ensures effective treatment.
Free Vaccination at 39 Centres in District
While the vaccine may cost up to ₹10,000 per dose in the private sector, it will be provided free of cost under this campaign. In Shimla city, five vaccination centres have been identified, while 39 centres have been designated across the district.
Registration of eligible beneficiaries will be done on the U-WIN portal by ASHA workers. Parental consent will be mandatory and will be recorded online through OTP verification.
After vaccination, mild fever or slight pain at the injection site may occur as temporary side effects. Beneficiaries are advised not to come on an empty stomach and must remain under observation for 30 minutes after vaccination.
