The Centre for Environment and Disaster Management, Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla celebrated World Environment Day on 5th June, 2021 by organizing a special virtual lecture on “Sustainable Development”. The event was graced by the auspicious presence of the Chief Guest Prof. Dr. Paramjit S. Jaswal, Vice-Chancellor, SRM University, Delhi-NCR, Sonepat, Haryana. The virtual session was presided by Prof. Dr. Nishtha Jaswal, the Vice-Chancellor, HPNLU, Shimla.
In her presidential address, Prof. Dr. Nishtha Jaswal, elucidated on worldwide impact of the ongoing global pandemic Covid-19 while stressing that the same stands attributable to man’s ignorance of what nature is capable of doing. The Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. Paramjit S. Jaswal, begin his address by highlighting the relation between development and principles of sustainability. He said “man has to live with nature and not at the expense of nature”.
The Chief Guest also reiterated the foundations of the sustainable development such as ‘doctrine of inter-generational equity’, ‘polluter pays principles’, ‘environmental impact assessment’ and stressed upon the obligations of the present generation to hold the available natural resources as trustee for the generations to come.
The chief guest took the participants through an intellectual journey of the inception, growth and development of Environmental Law Jurisprudence all across the globe, and also reminded the most potent threats to sustainable development such as poverty, employment and women empowerment etc.
During the virtual session Prof. Dr. S.S. Jaswal, Registrar, HPNLU, Shimla delivered the formal welcome address. The event ended with a hearty vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Chandreshwari Minhas, Co-ordinator of the Centre. The event was moderated by Dr. Girjesh Shukla, Director, CEDM, HPNLU, Shimla and co-ordinated by Mr. Anirudh Sood, Member, CEDM, HPNLU, Shimla.
