Shimla: Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap on Saturday honoured two “Children of the State” — Amrit Verma and Mokshit Sharma — for their outstanding achievements. The DC felicitated the children by presenting them with traditional shawls and caps, appreciating their inspiring accomplishments at a young age.
Praising their efforts, the Deputy Commissioner said that both students have set an example for others. Amrit Verma has been selected for the state-level INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) workshop, while Mokshit Sharma has been awarded a ₹12,000 annual scholarship under the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS).
Focus on Innovation and Scientific Thinking
Amrit Verma, a student of Government Senior Secondary School Tutikandi, had earlier submitted a proposal under the INSPIRE Award Scheme by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. His project focuses on developing a “Smart Helping Stick” for visually impaired individuals.
The device will include sensors, vibration motors, a speaker, and a battery system to detect obstacles within a range of 1–2 meters, helping visually impaired users navigate safely. Amrit has also received ₹10,000 financial assistance to develop the model, which he will present at the state-level workshop in Dharamshala.
Scholarship Support for Education
Mokshit Sharma has been selected under the NMMSS, a central government scheme that provides financial assistance of ₹12,000 per year (₹1,000 per month) to meritorious students from economically weaker sections to continue their studies from Class 9 to 12.
Government’s Commitment to Child Welfare
The DC highlighted that under the Mukhyamantri Sukh Ashray Yojana, orphaned and vulnerable children are given the status of “Children of the State.” The government takes full responsibility for their upbringing, education, healthcare, and future, ensuring they do not face any hardship.
He added that the scheme aims to make children self-reliant and integrate them into the mainstream of society by providing free education, healthcare, accommodation, skill development, and career support, along with financial assistance.
Both Amrit and Mokshit completed their Class 8 education from Government High School Jakhu and are currently studying at Government Senior Secondary School Tutikandi.
District Programme Officer Mamta Paul was also present on the occasion.
