The Department of Environmental Science, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni in collaboration with MANAGE, Hyderabad organised a three-day online training on ‘Climate Smart Technologies for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation in Agriculture’.
Prof. Rajeshwar Singh Chandel, University Vice-Chancellor was the Chief Guest during the inaugural session. Professor SK Bhardwaj, Head, the Department of Environmental Science coordinated the training while Dr. Pratima Vaidya was the co-coordinator. In this training, 50 extension officers, subject matter specialists from the State Department of Agriculture and Horticulture, scientists from various Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Professors and Research Scholars from various universities of the country participated and learned about the recent changes in climate, its impact on crops, insect pest dynamics and pollinator behaviour. In addition, participants were also apprised about the concept of eco-literacy, carbon farming, weather-based agro-advisories, mitigation and adaptation of climate change by using climate-smart technologies.
Prof Chandel stressed on the need to study and adopt climate-smart technologies in agriculture. He asked the scientists and the agriculture professionals to work with the farmers and understand their needs and also pick out the technologies which are in sync with the environment. He said that such trainings are necessary for the capacity building of extension officials in order to provide benefit to the farmers. Dr. Bhardwaj said that this training would enhance the knowledge of participants and help in identifying good practices for combating climate change impacts in the region. Prof. Bhardwaj also expressed interest in organising such training in offline mode in association with MANAGE, Hyderabad so that hands-on practices may be shared with the field officials.
