The widening work of the national highway (NH)709-A between Karnal and Jind has gained pace after virtually remaining at a standstill for the past several months.
In view of the public demand, the government had planned to widen the road. The Rs 200-crore project had begun in mid September 2018 and the deadline was March 13, 2020, but it could not be completed in the stipulated time and the deadline was further extended to May 8, 2020. The enforcement of the lockdown has also forced the authorities to extend the deadline further to July 15, 2020.
Before the commencement of the project, the width of the metal road was 7 meters and now it is being widened up to 10 meter. In Urban areas, the width will be up to 18 meter and 9 meters on each side. A central verge of 1.5 meter is being developed. More than 500 electric poles will be erected at the central verge for lighting.
