The monsoon has been in Himachal Pradesh for twenty-five days, and during that time, it has severely damaged the region. The state has seen significant damage as a result of floods and strong rainfall. Due to the current circumstances, the government has already lost Rs 786 crore in property. As of right now, the state has seen 105 fatalities, 35 reported missing persons, and 184 injuries from rain-related incidents.
Data from the Disaster Management Authority shows that, with 21 fatalities, Mandi district has experienced the most. Eight to eight individuals have perished in the districts of Hamirpur, Bilaspur, and Una, while seventeen people have perished in Kangra, eleven in Kullu, and nine in Chamba. 798 cow shelters have been demolished, while 1046 homes have sustained partial or total damage.
In addition to Mandi, Kangra and Kullu have also been devastated by floods. The state government claims that the Jal Shakti Department has sustained property loss totaling around Rs 414 crore, the most severe impact from the monsoon. Additionally, the Public Works Department has lost almost Rs 345 crore. The administration and the public are now even more concerned after being warned that there might be more rain in the days ahead. Although the administration is always keeping an eye on the situation, landslides and road washouts in the high areas are also impeding rescue efforts.
A yellow signal for heavy rain has been issued by the Meteorological Department for several parts of the state through July 21. At the same time, Jubbarhatti in the Shimla district received 56 mm of rain, the most in the previous 24 hours. In addition, there have been reports of 30–30 mm of rain in Salapad and Bilaspur, 28 mm in Kasauli, 24 mm in Dharampur, and 23 mm in Kufri. The majority of the state was still experiencing rain last night, and the severe weather persisted until Tuesday morning.
Rain and landslides have severely impacted traffic in Himachal. The State Emergency Operations Center reports that 220 state routes would remain blocked until Tuesday AM. 153 drinking water systems and 67 electrical transformers are no longer operational. With 160 roads blocked, 61 transformers out of commission, and 133 drinking water systems impacted, the Mandi district has been the most hit. Eighteen drinking water systems are not functioning in Kangra either.
