Himachal Pradesh is currently witnessing two contrasting weather patterns. While the higher mountain ranges are glittering under fresh snowfall, the low-lying and plain areas are enveloped in dense fog, disrupting normal life. In some valleys, bright sunshine has followed snowfall, whereas icy winds continue to intensify the cold in other regions.
Atal Tunnel Closed for Normal Traffic, Record-Breaking Cold in Lahaul
Weather conditions have changed significantly in the higher reaches of the state following fresh snowfall. Heavy snow between Solang Nala and the Atal Tunnel has led to restrictions on the Leh–Manali Highway, with only 4×4 vehicles being allowed to operate. Normal vehicular movement has been halted.
The Tabo area of Lahaul-Spiti recorded the coldest night of the season, while temperatures in Keylong and Pangi dropped well below freezing after fresh snowfall. However, Manali and parts of Lahaul witnessed clear sunshine on Tuesday morning after overnight snow, much to the delight of tourists.
Dense Fog Hits Plains, Visibility Reduced
While the hills grapple with snowfall, districts like Bilaspur, Sundernagar and Paonta Sahib are facing severe fog conditions. In Bilaspur, visibility dropped to nearly 100 metres, making driving difficult. Parts of Hamirpur and Mandi also reported poor visibility, affecting morning traffic.
Weather Forecast: Yellow Alert Issued
According to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, light snowfall and rain may continue in higher altitude areas in the coming days. A Yellow Alert for dense fog has been issued for Solan, Sirmaur, Kangra, Bilaspur and Mandi districts. Dense fog is expected to persist in the plains until January 9, likely intensifying the cold wave conditions.
Travel Advisory:
Tourists planning to travel towards Manali or Leh have been advised to check road conditions and weather updates before starting their journey.
